If you're trying to develop a stability indicating method, it is a good idea to be certain that your method can discriminate between your main peak(s) and any known process impurities and likely degradation products.
Standard degradation via oxidation, heat, humidity, acid, base and light exposure is a common way to produce at least some of your primary degradation products and running these degraded standard portions is how you establish your method's specificity.
