Derivatisation of sulfonic acids for GC/MS analysis.

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

Does anyone have any experience of derivatising sulfonic acids for subsequent GC/MS analysis ?

I was looking at methane sulphonic acid at low levels in an organic solvent a few years ago. I had a go at forming the methyl ester, seemed to work ok. Unfortunately the methyl ester of methane sulphonic acid appears to be a potent carcinogen. The need for a test disappeared but may be needed in the future so I would be interested in your findings.
