So what's the word on capillary HPLC systems...? Someone told me you could get chiral separations in 5 minutes...

Roxanne 42,
a lot of words have been published on capillary HPLC. What does it mean in brief:
as such chromatography is the same as with standard ID colums but :
smaller ID, so lower flow rates, lower injection volumes ( less sample amount can be brought onto the column), lower elution volumes ( sepecial detector in respect to cell volume needed),...
so special equipments needed . This means pro's and con's
less solvent consumption... and this lead to your item: chiral separations in 5 minutes:
as one is using capillary columns, flowrates are low, solvent consuption is low, so one could use "exotic "solvents :
indeed for chiral separations different modes can be used , such as adding complexes, which could be quiet expensive.
So using capillary columns will reduce you operational costs.
And that could be a reason to use capillary columns, but a lot of drawbacks are there as well!
Hope this helps a bit
