Hi everybody,

I am having a varian CP 3800 GC with ECD and FID. I wanted to mesure some volatiles in ambient air by purge and trap. Can i attach a separate module of purge and trap such.
I also wanted to know how much it can cost.

best regards
rajdeep

Why don't you call your local sales rep for Varian?

I am certain they have something for you or at least can direct you to a third party.

This forum is not intended for getting quotations for purchase of equipment.

Rajdeeproy,

I can think of at least three ways to connect a separate purge and trap to your 3800. First is to cut into a split/splitless supply line to the injection port, take the carrier to the purge and trap and the transfer line from the purge and trap to the injection port. Very common for EPA 8260 these days. This alternative is nice since it gives you narrow peaks and you can still use the injection port as usual. Second, you can take the transfer line to a low volume inlet as offered by companies such as Restek. Third, you can take the transfer line directly into the oven and use a union to connect to the column but in this scenario you have to use a megabore column to handle the flows necessary for the purge and trap. This should not be a big deal since you are using the FID and ECD detectors.

If you look at web sites like Tekmar or OI you should be able to find application notes on this connection.

Regarding pricing, it depends on your configuration, the vendor, and whether you decide to go new or used.

Best regards.

Thanks all of you for those suggestion. I would call my varian people to check if there is any alternative or else i will modify it.

Just a thought. If you are measuring volatiles in ambient air you just need the trap. The cheapest way to purge is make/use a sorbent trap that fits in your injector body. It's not perfect but that's the way we did it 35 years ago before automation.
