can any one gimme a clear explanation as to wat metastable peaks are?

A metastable ion is an ion formed outside of the source region. For example an ion of m/z 400 on leaving the ion source may dissociate to give an ion at m/z 200. The metastable ion will usually appear indistinct(wider) compared to stable ions
