Fingerprinting by GC-FID

has anybody tried to use the FID to fingerprint ( to produce some kind of library based on retention time of the standard)

The answer is YES. Used in hydrocarbon analysis for decades.

Kovas indices were/are used for doing such kind of fingerprinting. This deals with the selectivity and retention on your statinoary phases.
FID is used as detector ( all purpose detector, as long as there are enough carbonatoms in your compound) in order to "see' your compounds of interest.

CAN ANYBODY SUGGEST SOME BOOK THAT EXPLAINED THE CHROMS IN DETAIL, COMPARED IT TO THE EPH standard.

Kovats indices are listed for many compounds on the NIST webbook web page. Furthermore, the ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) has an excellent arson investigation book that compares some 80 or so flammable mixtures against a normal alkane standard mix run under identical conditions. Unfortunately, I do not know how to obtain a copy (there is nothing on my version that tells me how) but if you are looking at hydrocarbon mixtures it would be worth the effort.
The ATF and the Kovats both require you to run a normal alkane mixture to establish retention times that can then be compared to the reference.
