Make a TSD into a FID

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

I have a older Varian 3400 equipped with a TSD. However I need a FID for biodiesel analysis. Does anyone have any ideas about modifying the TSD to work as a FID? Also does anyone know what column and protocol are suitable for ASTM method 6584, glycerol, methyl esters, and tri, di mono glycerides?
Also I would like to use a older PC as a data collector. Does anyone have any ideas as to what inexpensive A/D card might be suitable for this purpose? Software suggestions? I have a PE nelson box but no software, any suggestions for a workaround?
Thanks,

If you want to convert the TSD into FID, you have to replace several components. Contact one of the firma that offer kits, eg
http://www.det-gc.com/GCEquipment.htm

They say their equipment will..
" Replace Varian TSD with DET NPD for lower cost ion sources and much improved P-peak shapes - DET TID/FID tower ($1650), TID-2 or TID-4 source ($285), and use compatible Varian TSD electronics. Adapt Varian TSD to other TID or FID modes by adding a DET Current Supply and appropriate Ion Source type to the above DET TID/FID equipment. "

ASTM will be able to tell you what columns are suitable for
ASTM D6584 I think ASTM may specify cold on-column injection. If so, ensure your GC is suitably equipped before investing in any detector upgrade.

Varian have an Application Note available that also gives details

Most column and instrument makers will have full information on equipment and columns for Biodiesel analysis - it's a lucrative new market for them.

Because of the gelling fiasco in Minnesota last Dec, and problems that USA military have experienced ( fortunately the USA declared war on Saddam instead of Siberia ), blending stocks of FAMEs for Biodiesel will soon have to meet all the the ASTM quality requirements of D6751-07 ( including D6584), rather than the shonky and shoddy voluntary agreements previously used by the B100 FAME industry.

States that mandate dubious Biodiesel product onto unsuspecting and innocent users have realised that the oil industry and car manufacturers' previously-expressed concerns about the FAME quality standards were justified.

There is now a huge market for dedicated FAME GCs, given the extensive and imminent mandates for Biodiesel. Most instrument manufacturers will offer fully-configured systems, so ask for their information brochures to get some idea of what is required.

Bruce,
Thanks.

The TSD electrometer for a 3400 should be useable for an FID without any major modifications, change some switch settings, since I think they used to sell them as TSD/FID combination electrometers. The base plate is the same for both detectors, both use a jet and crunch washer but I am not sure about the detector body and the internal ceramics and collectors. If you have an old Varian catalog you might be able to discern the difference in the parts inside and order just those parts. Otherwise, you might just purchase a complete new or used FID body from Varian or other aftermarket dealers.
