I'm from a small academic lab at Univ Calif Santa Cruz. We have a Shimadzu SCL-10Avp controlling two LC-10ADvp pumps and a SPD-10Avp detector that we would like to control with a computer. We have a quote from Shimadzu, and even at a substantial discount it is $2100 for LCsolution Ver. 1.21 Single. Max 1x LC System Control. More than we would like to spend for just the software. I am wondering if anyone has a used copy for sale, or knows of a cheaper controller software.

agrp87,
I'm not sure if there are 3rd party software to run the Shimadzu controller. I suspect the LC-Solution software will interrogate a parallel-port dongle much like their Class-VP do now. This process checks the serial number of each module, what features should be enabled and what to disable according to the licensing agreement, etc, each time you run the software.
Without the dongle, the software will only operate on demo-mode. That is, it will only recognize and open a few demo data files; however your own data files will not open, until a dongle is in place.
Whichever way you look at this, I think your best solution is to seek out Shimadzu and purchase a copy of their software and dongle. If you already have the software, I think they sell the dongle by itself - about AUD200.

GenTech Scientific sells used Shimadzu systems with PeakSimple software, which collects data from the analog outputs of your detector. You'd still have to run the system from the SCL-10Avp, but you'd be collecting all your data on a PC. It may save you $600.

Dear sfe-co2:
I am not aware that Shimadzu has switched to dongle to control software license. We have no dongle from Shimadzu!
To activate Class VP software, one needs to come to the site:
http://chromatographykey.com/shimadzu
to do it. And it is not easy like installing MS Office 97 or 2000 (with a provided CD key). You can do it only once. (It's harder than installing Mathematica from Wolfram!).
Good luck to agrp87.
Alfred.

Dear Alfred88,
Perhaps its different in the USA. I am certainly unaware of web site activation for Class-VP here in Australia. Gee, I don't think this "once only attempt" activation policy will go down well with new customers. Apologies if I've misled anyone here. Yep, with all these protection methods, it's good luck to agrp87 too.
Uwe, it really is call the dongle (and its not a rude word)....hahaha. It's computer-speak or computerese.
