Joining two columns together and running all in one?

Is there any research or evidence out there that you can run an acid column joined to a florisil column and run it at the same time to eliminate the solvent exchange step in between acid and florisil clean-up columns?

Please let me know of the most recent advances in their area,
Thanks and hope you have a great day,
M

The most general answer would be "probably not". A more specific answer would require more details as to things like:
- what is your analyte?
- what matrix?
- what solvents used to load/rinse/elute from the acid and florisil columns?
- what specifically is the "acid" column?

It's an acid silica column- basically which is used to clean up train samples- and eluded with Hexane. The florisil column is basically florisil powder- which is first eluded with hexane- to push out unwanted crap- then it's eluded with a small percent of DCM in hexane- to get the wanted target dioxins.

Do you think we could just attach the acid to the florisil- elude first with hexane, then with the small percent of DCM in hexane?

Actually, in that case, it probably would work. It's certainly worth a try.

As I think about it, if you wanted to, you could probably use a "mixed bed" cartridge (containing a mixture of both the silica and the florisil) and get the same results.

Thanks!

True, I could mix the to beds together.

Thanks for all your help! :thumright:

You might wish to review the dioxin system from Supelco. It is used to concentrate PCBs and Dioxins from a variety of matrices.

It uses a seven layer acid silica, neutral silica, and basic silica column.

The silicas are available individually and as prepared columns.

best wishes,
