Well I asked this last year so I thought I would ask it again....

What would be the best thing to get for a present this year.

At work,
a new member of staff, we have been down one person in my team for 6 months now.

At home,
a new route to get to work that doesn't take between 60 and 90 mins to travel 12 miles!!!! Never live and work on two opposite sides of a river, a new bridge is planned for 2008 but I may have died of frustration by then.

I've been a good boy this year, so hopefully santa will bring me a magic column to seperate my "fermentation broth" (you can feel yourself sag when someone asks you to develop a method for that.)

At home I'd like an on-site electrician since my lights television and computer have all died seperately in the last 2 evenings It'd also be nice if my landlord/letting agency got off their butts and fitted the double glazing they keep promising to stop our house getting full of condensation every day, but you can't have everything can you?

I'm just happy they put the ferry by my home back into service. It's actually faster to drive upriver to the nearest bridge, but taking the ferry is more relaxing. Plus, it gives me time to make phone calls to family and friends.

If it makes you feel any better, I drive 60 minutes in the morning, and 90 miutes in the afternoon. And it won't get any better until they extend I-49 to New Orleans, and that project is on hold indefinitely while they rebuild the city.

Maybe we should have another thread to find out who has the longest commute to work, or the slowest or even the most scenic. A trip on a ferry sounds great. I thought seriously about buying a speed boat at one point! My home town and work towns are both on the river estuary.

At the risk of sounding smug I live a mile from work and yes I do drive. It sometimes takes up to 5 minutes to get here! What a drag.

What I'd like santa to do for me is to recruit my boss as one of his little helpers - permanently. That way he could use his "business orientation and wider strategic focus" and I could get back to the lab more often!

Maybe you should get a scooter and lane split (aka, filter)?

I considered the jet-ski option for my commute, but playing tag with thousand-ton coal barges and ocean-going freighters seems like a bad idea.

Short of winning the lottery:

For work--a promotion, and everybody understanding of how our LIMS works!

For home--a date with my wife, a Oneway 2436, 3HP woodlathe

And since I take the train to work, my commute take about 40 minutes each way with NO traffic problems!
