Varian 8100 autosampler problem--and seeking manual

Hello--

We have a Varian 3400 GC with an 8100 autosampler. Yesterday, in the middle of a run we got an autosampler timeout error. This has happened before, and reseting and restarting the run from the last vial usually works.

However, now when I try to start a run, the autosampler is 'sticking'. It will begin the up/down moving process, but the syringe carriage will not descend beyond a certain point. I've tried cleaning the guide bars, but this hasn't done much. I also started to get a grinding noise.

Beyond any advice, we're also looking for an Operator's Manual for the 8100. This one was switched out from another of our locations when an old 8200 we had broke down a few years ago. Does anyone know where to get manuals?

Thanks.

Try also cleaning the threaded rod that drives the syringe up and down.

Have you tried to get a manual from Varian ?

We will be calling Varian as soon as they open.

Which is about now. They're in CA and we're in IN.

We may have actually found the problem, though cleaning that threading is not a bad idea. Thanks.

There is a set of little wheels at the top of the drive belt on the tension adjustment lever. We think the ball bearings inside them have seized up. Certainly they seem to be much harder to turn than in the identical piece in another AS we have. So we're trying to clean that up now.

Hopefully that's it.
