I have come into the middle of a project where the person that set it up is no longer working on the project. I am also a novice at working with GCs. There is a 6-port HPLC valve hooked up to a GC. The 6-port valve is not hooked up to a pump. We are doing high pressure injections. I was wondering if this setup would work? Can you have an HPLC valve hooked up to a GC? Does the valve need to be hooked up to a pump?

A six port valve is generally used as a carrier switch (changing carrier gases easily and quickly) or as a gas sampling valve. You may have a tube going to a gas sample cylinder, another tube going to a hood or a vent to atmosphere, perhaps.

Does the valve have any connections at all? To where do they go? Determine the connections and the purpose of the valve should become clear. Without knowing how and to where the connections go, it is anyone's GUESS.

best wishes,

Rod
