I am trying to use agilent 5973 make voc analysis of charcoal cartridges.
To extract the cartridges i use cs2, then i inject 1 microliter in splitless with 0,1 min of purge time.

Could I have problems using cs2 like solvent? I read that cs2 can give problem at the source after many injection.

Sorry for my not very good english

Thanks

I am not aware of any problem with CS2 in long-term use with MS.

The only problem is the heath issue. ACGIH have posted a notice of intended change of TLV from 10 ppm (8 hours) to 1 ppm. It may require additional ventilation which labs have not had to concern themselves with up to now.

In my OHS lab focusing on the testing of hazardous substances that workers are exposed to in the workplace, we have a few testings where CS2 is used to desorb the absorbed substances from charcoal materials and then an aliquot of CS2 desorbate is analysed by GCMS. We hardly experience the problem from this procedure so far due to the usage of CS2.

I couldn't agree more with the heath issue raised by MikeD.

Or even the health issue :)

A few years ago I did an atmospherical chemistry project where we trapped VOC's on a column with a carbon phase.
We then analysed what we caught using GC-TOFMS.
The desorption from the column was done by flash heating the column I think.
Unfortunately I wasn't really involed with the instrumental side, just the sampling and data analysis, but this may be an alternative solution.

When I was working on eviromental samples I used DMF and DMSO to performed the analysis. Also I worked with DRO and GRO ( hidrocarbons) and I did the extraccion and then the GC/MS with 1 ul of CS2 and I coulnt remember to had any problem about using that solvent.
