Agilent 6890 setup questions.

I have a local school asking about getting a 6890 they purchased setup. They have one with the HPIB connection on it and they have the chemstation that Agilent has said will work(though I don't know yet if it is Chemstation or MSDChemstation) or what version. They also have a 6850 with Jet Direct and they are wondering if the Jet Direct could be swapped to the 6890. I am thinking that the Jet Direct would not work unless the 6890 has an updated 6890N motherboard.

Would it be easier and less expensive to obtain a 82350B GPIB card and try to configure it that way or to try to upgrade the 6890 to LAN interface? Or possibly use the USB to HPIB adapter, which I have never set up before so not sure how those would work.

Has anyone tried this and had success?

Thanks

I think - simpler way would be obtaining 6890N upgrade EPROM (2 chips that can be ordered from Agilent) than HPIB mess.

With the help of our Agilent engineers we have upgraded 6890 Plus to N.
1. Two EPROM chips ordered from Agilent.
2. JetDirect card extracted from printer (they are the same as CAG JetDirect but cheaper :))
3. Hand-made ribbon cable for JetDirect MIO port
4. Two steel stands appropriate in height to secure the card (stock Agilent cradle is too expensive)

Also - I'm not sure 6850 has JetDIRECT - there is no place for it inside. They used to be shipped with Lantonix X-Port built into which have been configured as JetDirect to TCP port 9100. So actually 6850 networking is RS-232 over Ethernet.

Does the Jet Direct connect to the 3x16 pin connector in the middle of the mother board?

Not sure I have anything to make that with but could possible purchase it somewhere.

I've never used such USB to HPIB adapter, but the one listed in that link is not expensive.

I've got used 82341 and 82350 boards for computers available, reasonable (one each).

The school contacted me and said they might be interested in the boards.

G2335A is the partnumber you need for the 6890 upgrade which will upgrade it to LAN based (not Jetdirect, that is a printer board mimicking LAN).
From the product description:
LAN communications interface. Includes 8m cable (Suitable for hub. Not a crossover cable). Also includes firmware upgrade. Compatible with 6890/6890Plus.
Includes: G1369A LAN interface; Screws, Bracket; Stand-off; Connector; LAN Cable; G1530-61706 ROM Set

So pretty complete with 1 partnumber. Service not included but maybe you can do it yourself.
