Hi,

I am looking for a thermal desorber to analyze VOC. I find two popular models from the literature, one is PE ATD-400 and the other is SIS TD-4 (now is updated to 5). Which is better? Please advise.

Thanks.

I am working since 1985 with PE-Desorbers, and since 1995 we analyze VOC (C6-C16, VDI 4300 Blatt 6) in indoor air. In the last 20 years we worked with 4 ATD-50. 5 ATD-400 and 3 Turbomatrix-TD. I think you should use the new PE Turbomatrix thermal desorber. If you have more questions I will answer.

The Turbomatrix TD and SIS desorbers are not direct competitors. I could list some disadvantages of the SIS but they may not worry you. The SIS needs liquid CO2 or Nitrogen for cryo focussing. Its quantitative performance particularly repeatability is difficult to assess because there is no recognised Proficiency Testing scheme for the tubes.

The Turbomatrix range and the SIS have very different origins and came out of different markets.

The first PE ATDs were used for workplace VOCs in air. Full automation and leak-testing was built in at the beginning in 1980 and in 25 years there have been many refinements.

On the other hand the SIS may suit your software needs or budget. Only you can decide.

Dear Mainzer,

Thanks for your information. Just talked with a PE representitive. Basically, there are two models I am interested: 350 ATD and 650 ATD. The 650 has the additional feature of being able to recollect samples. Not sure if this is necessary. One important thing we care about is how the PE services are?

Thanks again
