Has anybody ever done hydrazine derivatisation for gc analysis. I have had a go with acetone but found that I get a couple of peaks, both were acetone derivatives (gcms). I can cope with this but would rather find a reagent that will give a single peak.

Have you tried benzaldehyde? It's a standard derivatization for LC but I never tried it with GC.

Mike, thanks for the reply, I had a thought about benzaldehyde, wasn't sure if the derivative would be volatile enough.
Acetone may well do the trick, I have a suspicion that the hydrazine I am using may not be that pure so there may well be a hydrazine type compound present which is also derivatising. The extra peak seems to be about 2% of the total areas so at the ppm level required for the test it will not be significant.
