Hi, I was wondering if it was possible to get some advice on the set-up of a new ELSD detector that has recently been aquired by my laboratory. We currently use a UV/VIS detector that we are looking to replace but have a few questions as to the saftey of the ELSD. Our main question would be as to whether it was necessary to introduce a fume hood into the equation in order to deal with the exhaust. It has previously been suggested that a liquid trap may be acceptable but we are growing increasingly unsure as to this being the case. I would really apreciate any advice as to the necessity of the fume cupboard and any suggestions as to ways around introducing one to our system ( as space is at a premium. )

I use a 4L bottle, with the exhaust from my Alltech MKIII going in. Then, I have a "house vacuum" line going outside from the same bottle.

The same thing can be set up with a large vacuum flask. You can also put an ice-bath around the flask or bottle.

There are other people in my department with newer ELSDs, and they have liquid traps, but go to the house vacuum after the trap as well.

Definitely vent any ELSD. You don't need any excess organic fumes floating around the lab. I have mine vented to a hood and have no problems.
