Imagine that you will tell me how to start up my GC cp3800. You can say, ok
1) Open the He bottle (carrie gas) and set up pressure at 60 psi
2) Let the gas flow for 10 min
3)Open the H2 and air botlles and set up pressure at 80 and 60 psi, respectively, and let flow for 10 min
4)Turn on GC swicht
At this point I asked you if the inyector flame is working
when and how the ignition of the FID flame ocurred and if ther is a risk of explotion.
I hope you can help me on this regards

It is really important that you get a copy of the instruction manual for the Varian GC. As you know there is a chance of an explosion when hydrogen and air mix.

To run the GC safely and properly the mimimum that you need to know is how to install a column and an inlet septum, how to measure flow rates and check for leaks, and how to connect up the data system (and use the software if you have software control). Unfortunatley this is not the sort of knowledge that you can pick up piece by piece from the forum.

If at all possible you must get someone who already knows how to run the GC to show you how it is done. The best would be your local Varian supplier.

There are real risks in the laboratory.
Please contact your local Variain dealer. I have personally found the engineers, tech support and sales folks to be extremely helpful.

I see no explosion danger! In the last 20 years no explosion caused by H2 in a Gc is known....

Did You have the Star workstation? Here sometimes connection trouble occures, switch on first the software (!) and than the GC.

When people who do not know even how to switch on a GC start playing around with trying to start one up there is a very real danger of a hydrogen explosion in the oven. If the detector gasses are on, but no column is installed, a mixture of hydrogen and air leaks down into the oven. Igniting the flame can cause a flash back through the flame tip into an enclosed space filled with hydrogen and air.

The reason that hydrogen explosions are very very rare is that nearly everyone using GC knows that a column needs to be connected to the detector, or that the detector connection must be plugged, if the flame gasses are on. "Explosions" in GC ovens are usually very minor affairs, that do not get reported, so do not expect to hear about them.

Haven't you ? About 10 years ago we had a customer with an old 4000 series Carlo Erba who installed a new column and went for coffee. On their return they were puzzled to see their colleagues hidding under benches. The GC had expoloded as they had installed the column without ferrules . The GC door fortunately held and all the safety features of the GC avoided worse damage. The GC still worked although the square oven was now much more curved It was used for a further 6 months before a replacement was purchased. This I am sure is not the only case to have occurred in the UK
Running Hydrogen carrier should be safe however you are always at risk with the weakest link (The operator ?) If you run Hydrogen carrier from a Cylinder or high capacity source you should buy a Hydrogen detector. If you run from a low capacity generator you are safer.The choice is yours however you could be mighty and worse if a mistake is made.

Note I am biased, firstly I know of an explosion, secondly we sell Hydrogen detectors in the UK

I already have got the manual
I also let you know that our GC is istalled properly but I would like to generate a operation manual in a way that myself and student can follow the instruction to turn on this model GC, and call a program to analyse alkaloids for example.

I have these specific questions,

How can use the crystal divice to set up He, H2 an air flow rates?

What can of solution should I use to make bubbles an calcultae velocity.


I know that detector on this GC igniiton works automatically after you turn GC, How works this? there is a chance that the ignition did not works?
