USB-GPIB issues with 5890 Series II

Folks,
Mechanical Engineer here dropping into your realm. Help is appreciated. Recently purchased the following
5890 Series II
7673 Injector W/Tray
G1512A controller.
82350B (inside a computer that sauced itself)
82357B Interface (used, seems to be legit)

Machine was supposed to be operating fine. Prior owner hooked it up the night before in low temp conditions and a capacitor blew on the host computer. Computer was inoperable.

We renegotiated a massive price drop. All machines power on, GC passes self test and sets all temps. Figuring it out.

Meanwhile - the issue.
I am attempting to run this machine on a virtual box installation. I pulled the old hard drive from the machine, built a virtual drive off of it and it booted right up. Pulled my serial numbers for chem station.

Installed IOLibSuite 16.3
Mounted the 82357B to the virtual machine
Ran the configuration.

I have set the USB SICL interface ID to hp82341. GPIB address is 21. VISA interface IS GPIB0. Logical Unit 7. Auto Discover on.

This thread confirms the renaming.

USB adapter is configured and the HP7673A shows a good connection. Talking correctly.

The 5890 is communicating with the USB interface, but returns a communication failure "The instrument failed to return an IDN string"

Where do I go next with trouble shooting this? Apparently... google doesn't document tribal knowledge from the 90's very well.

FYI, following GPIB testing instructions, I confirmed GPIB location of 15. I then initiated a GPIB listen test and monitored incoming GPIB messages. The system received the GPIB request *IDN?%J but then timed out when responding.

Well, I'm stuck in the 1990s, I'm retired now. So I'm before there were these 82357B interfaces. And I'm afraid my knowledge base pretty much stops when Chemstation B revisions came out (however, I did use some C revision stuff a few years, but those instruments used IP address stuff to connect).

However, we did use 82350 GPIB boards in our computers (and I actually still have some of those boards available); but when we set those up we typed in the interface ID to hp82341 but used a "bus address" of 30. If you have 82350, I'm not sure why you would also need a 82357B.

Yes, stuff like the GC address code and autosampler access code are set up in Configuration Editor.

Well,
This is gonna sound silly... but all it took was deselecting the auto discovery in the IO library for the interface.

Once that was deselected, the IO library was talking to the injector and getting back an IDN, but the instrument remained a mystery to IO library. I started up chem station and it all started talking.

HAAAAZAAAAH

Silly? I have no idea what that even means.

But glad for you that it's working now.
