agricultural residues in citrus oils and extracts

Discussions about GC-MS, LC-MS, LC-FTIR, and other "coupled" analytical techniques.

Hi to all who may help,
I am thinking organochlorine, organophosphorous, sulphur containing etc.
How do you go about this challenging analysis?
What sample preparation is required? Can oils be injected neat?
What detectors need to be used?
I have done some preliminary work but appear to sometimes get stuck with sudden loss of analytes/irreproducibility. I am using GC-MS is splitless mode trying not to overload the liner/column! I have nothing else yet. Are there any courses I could attend?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
(Consumer Products Guy are you out there?!)

Hi WK

The first step in any method development is to do a literature search. When you do this you will find that your questions have already been answered in the vast majority of cases.

For most agricultural residues in most matrices there are thoroughly validated methods that are specified in detail. Try those first.

Dear WK,

There are some aplications notes out there, who describe using SPME or SPDE as sample prep and GC/MS or GC-MS/MS. The downside of injection oils and neat samples is that you overlead the system with the main compound, so that you don't see the analyte of interestl But if you have to go that route an MS/MS might be necessary.

There are three GC-MS/MS manufacturers -- Varian, Waters and now CHROMSYS/Agilent. You can contact me if you need more info.
