Anyone having slow loading problems?

I've just gotten a report about slow load times for the Forum but I can't duplicate a problem (it seems to be running about normal for me).

Has anyone else noticed abnormally slow response recently?

[for comparison, if I flush the cache first, it takes about 1.3 sec for the Forum to open. This is using Firefox under Windows 2000 with a cable modem].

Thanks!

Hi Tom

It was slow yesterday (13th) in the morning (SA time) but internet performance here is always slighly eratic. By slow I mean a few tens of seconds to load and submit - we are not talking minutes.

When things are dragging, look at your own PCs performance (task manager tab). It could be that your buddies in IS are having a scan run or something. If that isn't it, run ping plotter to a known good IP address outside your own network (google pingplotter, there's free versions out there). This program will allow you to identify any bottlenecks between you and the IP address.

If there are none, then it's time to ask Tom to ask his IS people about the server.

Hi Tom

Since late last week loading has been noticably slower - tens of seconds to change screens.

A few minutes ago (approx 12:00 local time) when I tried to log in I got an error message that there were too many users connected. I didn't think to save it for the details, sorry.

Thank you all for the feedback. I was having very slow (as in, timing out!) connection lfrom home ast night. I could go to a DOS prompt and ping the site with no problem (50 ms or so round trip). I reset my router and the problem went away. We use a "commercial" ISP. The fact that the problem seems to be intermittent suggests that there's no problem with the site per se, but rather "traffic jams" on the internet.

It's 11:30 Eastern Time. I am the only visitor to the site, and I have been kicked out several times from reading the posts.

The access for posting has been slow, but not prohibitive.

I hate intermittent problems!

The next time anyone runs into slow response, could you open up a DOS box ("CMD prompt") and issue the command tracert www.chromforum.com , then copy the result to a text file and send it to me (tjupille@sepsci.com)? Hopefully, that will let me figure out where the bottleneck is ocurring.

The tracert command returns the route the message took to get to the destination as well as the time required for each "hop".

Tracing route to chromforum.com [207.44.216.56]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms
2 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms
3 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms (1-3 pulled for Co. security purposes)
4 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 209.83.219.117
5 20 ms 21 ms 20 ms dcr1-at-7-2-0-950.denver.savvis.net [208.172.163.133]
6 35 ms 35 ms 36 ms dcr1-so-0-0-0.dallas.savvis.net [204.70.192.94]

7 35 ms 35 ms 35 ms dcr2-so-6-0-0.dallas.savvis.net [204.70.192.50]

8 40 ms 35 ms 35 ms bcr1-so-1-0-0.dallas.savvis.net [204.70.193.17]

9 41 ms 40 ms 41 ms 208.172.129.2
10 * 41 ms 41 ms ivhou-207-218-245-29.ev1.net [207.218.245.29]
11 42 ms 41 ms 42 ms ivhou-207-218-245-114.ev1.net [207.218.245.114]

12 42 ms 42 ms 42 ms 1002-14.lowesthosting.com [207.44.216.56]

Trace complete.

Repeats show Savvis @ Denver, Dallas, Houston being slow.

Are we limited to 10 people being on at once? I was getting "too many users" errors today - it appears that I was the 11th...

Around this time (17:00 Central European Time) things usually slow down in Germany, apparently the US east coast is waking up at this time. Thus, the latest I usually take a look at the forum is at about 16:00. Uwe must have been swamped by the west coast getting going?

No limit on the Forum per se, and I'm not aware of any limit on the account (there have been more users than that), so I'm puzzled.

By the way, thanks for the tracert, DR. Your results sort of confirm mine; when I do find a bottleneck, it's somewhere in transit rather than with this site itself.
