What does the term "sleeve" mean when talking about columns?

Could you put it into context please? I have not heard that term previously. Perhaps it is a very old term? Perhaps it is unique to your geographical location?

Thomas,
A sleeve is used when you connenct a column using tubing with a narrow outer diameter (for instance fused silica). The sleeve makes it fit to standard connections (ferrules).
Hope this is of any help?

Sleeve typically refers to a piece of peak tubing an inch or two long. You thread the silica through put a 1/16 ferule and nut over the whole thing and tighten it into a fitting. The ferule will crimp down on the the peak and seal the silica inside. These setups are commonly used on LCms nebulizers for apci. Use this setup when you need to split off minor amounts of the total flow to send to a detector
