Photocatalytic glycerol derivatives HPLC Analysis

Hey experts ,
Need Help.
I'm new with HPLC and i'm working on a project for my master degree.Trying to find out which type of column is adequate for glycerol derivatives HPLC analysis i found that many papers are using Ion exchange HPLC method. Anyone can explain how we use here ion exchange ?
Is there any possibility to work in reverse phase ?

HPLC has many modes including 'reverse phase' (which is very common). Since glycerol is 'very' hydrophilic (water loving) you want to use the HILIC mode. Glycerol is also 'almost invisible' in the UV therefore your detector should be MS, CAD or ELSD. Science rules!

Is it possible to use a Refractive index detector for glycerol derivatives analysis ? Is there any great book about hilic hplc method development ?
