Others say its not a big deal and that UPLC columns and machines are designed to withstand the pressure. Any thoughts?

Yes, we use Waters UPLCs in our lab so the name has stuck.Rubish! Just set it at the required flow rate. Bunch of newbies.
BTW: It is "HPLC", not "UPLC" which is a trademark of the Waters Corporation. No one "does" uplc. It is all HPLC.
