I have some questions about Siemens Maxum 2.
Firstly, how can i be sure that the FID flame lits?

I agree, I always kept and empty 40ml beaker sitting on the instrument just for that.
The past is there to guide us into the future, not to dwell in.

Crikey !!! I was doing that wrong all those years - I used a different sized beaker!
The Devil is in the details. I always find that anything kept on the instrument got too warm for this job - so I keep mine on the bench.

What does the SOP define as the ideal temperature for the spanner :-)

Mine was in the room for Volatiles analysis so we had the air conditioner always blowing across the instruments and the room temperature set to 65F. Never had trouble getting condensation on the beaker :) , or a wrench, or anything else shiny that was laying around.

A colleague of mine violated the Cool Surface SOP version 3(a) Beakers by keeping his on top of the GC. Finding it too warm, and having a good understanding of physical chemistry, he put a bit of pentane into it and swilled it around to cool it by evaporation.

He then violated SOP A 1 Engage Brain Before Any Action and held the beaker above the FID, leading to rapid implementation of procedure OSHIT 3 applicable in cases of small quantities of flaming liquids held by hand in glass containers.

Sometimes I wonder how any of us lived long enough to be reminiscing on Chromforum.

I checked that there is water vapours on glass surface but there is a fault 'Flame Out'. I check flame gas supply and EPC is working properly.
What can i do about it??
Will the GC operate while there is a flame out fault ?. If it can inject some pentane or hexane and see if you get a signal.

Can you adjust the flame out sensor setting ?

Have you measured the flow of hydrogen, air and make up gas with an independent flow meter (i.e. not the flow controls of the GC).

To be clear, I have little experinence and knowledge about Maxum 2. I have some documents but I did not find any setting procedure or measurement procedure.
To sum up, our Maxum measures benzene and toluen and it has not worked since 3 months and I can give detailed information in a few days.

I don't know anything about this instrument but I see from the pictures online that there is a readout screen on the instrument. When you think you have the detector lit, is there a screen that will show you a analog value of the detector signal? For instance, on my Agilent systems, if you go to the screen on the instrument that deals with the detector, when the flame is lit and stabilized I see a value that is somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-5 picoamps. If the flame is not on, the reading is zero.

I see benzene 0.193 % but not see toluen. Expected benzene value is 1-2%.
