surfactants in the mobile phase

When is one recommended(or else compelled) to use surfactants in the mobile phase in the HPLC analysis,and in what maximum concentration,can it be used.Are there any specially modified columns to serve the purpose.?

Most commonly to obtain retention of hydrophilic ionized analytes, in which case the technique is called "ion pair chromatography". If you do a search of the Forum using that phrase, you will get lots of information.
