Recently our 7890 shutdown all of a sudden. When we try to restart the instrument it goes through the self test. When the Agilent 7890 screen appears it shuts down all of a sudden. The agilent manuals basically tell you to call them. Any help?

We are using the MSD Chemstation. The issue is that I can't even get to the software stage. The GC turns off right after the self test when it is turning on so I don't have any error codes which makes it very difficult to diagnose.

Hello
Open MS Config file (it should be on desktop) and remove GC and MSD from configuration - just write down IP addresses for both.
Re-configure both instrument and it should help.
After this procedure new "initialization" files are created and you should be able to open MSD Chemstation.
Regards
Tom

Does your 7890 (BTW. A or B) pass startup test ? Any relevant information on 7890 display ?We are using the MSD Chemstation. The issue is that I can't even get to the software stage. Usual configuration won't allow ChemStation to start without GC on.
However your GC shut down suddenly when ChemStation was started. There is a chance that ChemStation logfile has got an information about GC failure.
You may try to check logfiles in ChemStation directory for such info.
Just check text files, not necessarily ended with txt extension. I guess that is what Tomasz suggested to look for, but from ChemStation menu.

The log file just says that chemstation lost connection with the GC. No other information
It is a 7890A.
I am not sure if the self test is done. It shuts down right at the moment when the Agilent Technologies screen turns on.
The only information I have is in the back the lights above the remote plug. Top one is red, middle is off and bottom is amber. These lights are supposed to indicate errors but unfortunately none of the agilent manuals actually say what they mean.

Unfortunately it's beyond my knowledge of 7890.

Hello
Can you turn GC on? - just GC, forget about MSD and unplugged it (unplugged remote cable from GC as well)
Try to use GC as standalone to check if it is related to MSD.
Regards
Tom

There is no MSD attached to the GC, we just use the MSD Chemstation to keep the software consistent with the rest of the lab.

Hello
Switch off your PC
1. Switch off GC
2.Press STOP button and turn GC on (keep STOP pressed)
3.GC will load factory setting
Please watch GC display during self test (first 40-60 sec) and see if you have any error messages.
Regards

With GC off hold the CLEAR button and continue to hold it until it powers on successfully.
