MTBE in Water

Dear friends,
I am looking to find a standard method for analaysing MTBE in water. I want just to find the methods which work with GC/FID .
Would you please guide me if there is a standard analitical method for identifying and measuring MTBE in water (ASTM is preferably needed).
Also please guide me if any other link related is.

Many thanks for your reply, but I want to find a method for analayzing MTBE in water with GC. I don't want to find a treatment method for MTBE removing, just want to measure MTBE concentrations in Water.

Actually I need to do standard method for measuring MTBE concentrations in water and I have to apply just a GC instrument with FID detector so I dont have any IMS instrument.
If you know about analayzing by GC, could you please tell me about.

There are many ways of performing this test. The problem with any 'standard' method are the possible trace impurities in the water which may give you a false positive.

Headspace analysis will give you a 1ng per 100mg sensitivity, but how low do you want to go. I suspect a lower limit of detection is desired.

A good method can be developed by using two dimensional GC technology. Large injection technique could be implemented to increase sensitivity. Simply use a non-polar column as your backflush column and a polar column as your analytical column.

Purge and trap is probably the best documented technique. Try reviewing the California EPA web site for the methods they use.

Around here the standard is SW-846 method 8015b with method 5035 (purge and trap). It can be done along with the BETX components during a gasoline analysis.
