This is a pretty simple post, i hope. I'm looking for a Benzalkoium lc uv method that uses something other than a cyano or SCX column. Any help would be great.

Look for Chrompack application note #99, uses ion paring on a C18 column.

We have a method for similar compound cetylpyridinium chloride with perfect symmetry and retention control. Check the following link, it also shows retention on C18 column. Our column is a mixed mode column with combination of reverse phase and ion-exchange groups.

Compounds like benzalkonium tends to tail a lt due to residual silanol interaction, evan end-capped columns show tailing (in our comparisson it was leading brand C18 end capped column).

Contact us if you have questions.

Hamilton Application Note #280. Uses a PRP-1 reversed phase column in straight RP mode.

Dear Robert,

Can you provide a link to the method. I tried to find it on the website but did not see it.

you can email it to vlad.orlovsky@sielc.com

I want to compare it to our method (peak shape for quaternary amines)

regards,

Vlad

Peak shape is actually not that great. Some improvement might be possible by running at elevated T and by using a 3 or 5um PRP-1 column. The application note is pretty old (>15yrs?) which explains the 10um particle size.

You could also try the Acclaim Surfactant column. Featured on the homepage at www.dionex.com

I have used amino phase for LC-MS of these compounds.
