Very Retentive Columns for Reversed Phase

Hello Scientists

So we are looking for a phase that would show very high retention in the Reversed Phase Mode, such that one could do separations with fairly low amounts of water (let's say 10 - 15% or less).

Why?.....trust me......long story. But this is what we're after. I only know of one thing that fits this description, which is graphite columns.

Can anyone suggest any other columns that show very high retention, in Reversed Phase mode?

In general you can check the hydrophobicity tables published by column manufacturers. Graphit is a good choice, C30 or better to say C18+ another choice. You did not ask that but another separation mode like HILIC maybe is an alternative if you have a pair of peaks not baseline separated. Hope that helps.

Chromalite MN - hypercrosslinked polystyrene

Remember, that "sorption mechanism" (sorbate - sorbent interactions) may be more complicated that simple RP mode.

You can explore porous graphitic carbon sold as Hypercarb. It is called a superhydrophobic reversed phase with very unique selectivity. Note that plate count may be slightly lower than traditional silica but its selectivity is great!
