in my lab there is a HP 6890 GC System + HP5973 Mass Selective Detector (both working just fine) except for the one big problem, that the computer for using the GC is broken. The HDD died and we are unable to find a suitable replacement. Even then it is more than questionable if we can still clone the old HDD. There is apparently no other copy of the original HP (or Agilent idk I came into the lab after the computer died) on a floppy disk, CD, USB or whatever backup. On the Agilent homepage it says that the "GC/MSD ChemStation Software" has been discontinued. I will try to call them to maybe get an old version of the software for a cheap price (hopefully even for free) but I doubt it.

Is there any other software you could recommend for the usage of the above stated GC system? I read something about Chromeperfect and Unichrom but obviously an experienced opinion would be quite helpful. Also it would be great if you could mention the price for a licence of whatever software you can recommend - my boss is pretty thrifty .

You already are a licensed user, so what you need is just replacement media, like a CD of the software. Some of the people here can supply such replacement software reasonably.

Well as far as I know the GC was bought from a pharmaceutical company (as we are an academic group) and the whole package included the computer with the software. Does this count as licensed user?

I know from the Agilent salesman, that the Chemstation license is not checked via an online server or anything so yeah basically we would just need a replacement CD (including a valid serial number because although we should have one, I am not sure that they still have the old one laying around here)

If you're lucky, the Agilent installer pasted the license number label/tag (you wrote licence, are you in UK?) on the side of the GC or MSD, is a 10-character letter and number code.

I still think someone will be able to supply replacement media CD disc for you. I'm retired now, and don't think I have a copy here, but would have made you a copy if this happened while I still was working. Maybe I'll get ambitious and look again here for you. But I still think someone here does have it and can Dropbox or something to you.

The 10-character letter and number code is indeed still on the side of the GC.
