We are looking at selling our Thermo- Polaris Q ion trap MS system which has a new AS3000 autosampler and also an LCQ Deca LC/MS (ion trap) system. Does anyone have an idea of what these may be worth? Both are in excellent condition. Our lab is in Australia.

You have three options.

1. Sell privately ie do the advertising find a buyer agree a price and liability (not recomended)

2. Use a used equipment dealer. There are quite a few about these days who will take equipment off your hands to sell on. A quick Google search for second hand equipment should set you in the right direction.

3. If you are planning another purchase you might consider trying to use them as part exchange, particularly if buying from Thermo again. Its often worth a manufacturer taking these off you to stop them reaching the market. The mark up on new equipment is significant so they may decide it is worth preventing this kit going onto the open market if they believe they could generate another "new sale" Plus they get the opportunity to sell the kit on to someone who cant afford new and make themselves look good in the process. Thus possibily generating a future sale. Its usually a win win situation for them.

As for what they are actually worth. Like anything they are worth only what someone is willing to pay for them. As a personal guide half what you paid for them, then depreciate that figure by 20% per annum for each year you've had them.

Good luck.
