Hi
I want to order 1 or 2 books on GC for our University library. E.g. one as a rather easy introduction, a more general book. And a second one that is very comprehensive. Our targets are mostly inorganic (atmospheric) trace gases, so we expect rather simple chromatograms. Detectors used are often TCD, FID, ECD, PID.
Any recommendations?

Hmmm - interesting question

I have read many and reviewed a few books on this subject

Contrary to 20 years ago there are now a very good number of resources online for theory and background - look at the manufacturer's websites or LCGC Magazine or Koni Grob - (or mine )

For atmospheric analysis - look for anything by Professor Alastair(Ali) Lewis, York University UK. I met him as a PhD student at Leeds University - really nice guy and some brilliant work.


With regard to books

For history
Milestones in the Evolution of Chromatography Leslie S. Etre is good

For theory

Look out for any by Walter Jennings (founder of J&W columns) - his lectures were so good and inspirational

A specific one

Solid Phase Microextracion theory and practice - Janusz Pawliszyn

The site is only intended for young students and I only originally set it up because I found that I was answering the same questions repeatedly on the basics of chromatography. It gets many hits but the downside is that I no longer got the interactions= I am thinking of closing it down.


For the other other online resources just Google (can you verb a noun? )

Koni Grob had a brilliant article in LCGC magazine on theory without equations, amongst others under the title of Koni's corner' which to me was beautifully explained but I can't find the link at the moment but I will try to connect with him to find the reference

Modern Practice of Gas Chromatography, Grob, is where I would send you first for the overview.

Then, if you can find them, The Analysis of Gases by Chromatography, Cowper and Fundamentals of Gas Analysis by Gas Chromatography, Thompson. a bit dated but still very pertinent to sampling inorganic gases.
