Communication error with SLC-10A VP & Class-VP 6.13

I just moved over a new institute and we are lacking chromatographic systems. Then we dig out some older systems from the cellar, but we cannot get them working.
As far as I can tell, parts are functional and running. However, we cannot make the Class VP to communicate with the controller unit through a com port.
When I start up the Class VP software, it makes a beep. Then it makes a second beeb, and a window appears (communication error) saying retry count exceeded. Manuals or the local distributor have not been able to solve the problem(s).
Any ideas what I should be after?
