Hi there,
Does anyone know (or have compiled) a tabulated comprehensive list of the dwell volumes of HPLC and UHPLC systems as a comparison. Would really appreciate is someone can point me in the right direction - thanks!

Hello
Dwell volume depends on LC system you have (high/low pressure mixing, tubing id, capillaries etc) so the best way to know it is to measure it.

I know what dwell volume is.
All I'm looking for is a summary table that compares various LC manufacturers specified dwell volumes (especially for Waters, Agilent and Shimadzu HPLC and UHPLC instruments).
Thanks

Hello
As dwell volume is measured between solvents mixing point and head of the column it includes sampler volume as well. So if you have different needle seats/loop etc. dwell volume will be different for different configurations:
1290 Quat pump and 1290 sampler will have different dwell volume from 1290 Bin pump (2 different Jet Weavers) with 1290 multisampler.
So I think you won't find table with compared volume for different systems however it is only my opinion so if there is table like that it could be quite handy...

Concerning UHPLC equipment, there is a list of some properties, including dwell volumes, of several machines in "UHPLC in life sciences" by Guillarme and Veuthey on page 33. That particular page is avialable via google.books (or at least it was as I checked it 5 minutes ago). However, as already mentioned, I'd used that list only as a very crude information, since the exact dwell volume will depend on the particular configuration.

Each manufacturer publishes spec sheets which provide the answer you are looking for. However, what they do not always provide are realistic values because each system can be plumbed differently for its intended application (not the vendors fault as they supply the systems in a generic configuration). The real answer to your question will only provide you with a ballpark value (and personally, would not worry about it), To obtain the actual values, you will have to install, then OPTIMIZE the plumbing/tubing choices on the specific system using your own tubing to have a complete system that you can then measure with a std.
