TETA (Method OSHA 60) mobile phase alternatives?

Discussions about HPLC, CE, TLC, SFC, and other "liquid phase" separation techniques.

Hello all,

Lurk from time to time but don't post often...

I've been given some tubes to analyse for triethylenetetramine in air - they're XAD coated with a napthylisothiocyanate derivitising agent.

The OSHA method the client followed:

https://www.osha.gov/dts/sltc/methods/o ... rg060.html

It has a pretty awful mobile phase (50% isoctane/IPA) and would really like to avoid changing our system over to normal phase for a one-off.

Anyone have any happier alternatives? I found a HILIC method but it still has plenty of octane and ipa in it as well.

Thanks in advance.

David
Hi David,

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any readily available alternatives for the application you note. From this link:

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_o ... c38ab415ca

there may be three papers you could read, none of which employ napthylisothiocyanate.

Hopefully someone out there will do better than I have. This one:

Journal of Chromatography B, Volume 860, Issue 1, 1 December 2007, Pages 92–97

is vaguely related only, but it may help, I'm not sure.

Best wishes...tough nut to crack, this one.

Thanks for the reply Matt.

I've subsequently found a couple of application notes from Dionex using %100 MeOH with formic acid. One of the columns were a proprietary C30 job but another was a monomeric 'high density' C18.

Pretty sure we have one of these around - or something like it - will try some standards tomorrow.
