I am trying to spec out a HPLC instrument. I need to do analysis of primary alpihatic amines ( amongst other things which are aromatic). Will a variable wavelength detector be able to handle this ? The levels of the amines will be high so I dont't need great sensitivity. There is lots of papers about derivatization for amine analysis which seems like something I want to avoid if possible. Any input would be really appreciated.

Aliphatic amines do not have much (i.e. any) absorbance. Refractive index would be a better bet, especially if your levels are high. Problems with RI, of course, are that it will respond to *everything* in the sample, it's incompatible with gradients, and temperature control is critical.

Tom,
Thanks, I suspected that aliphatic amines might not work well with a UV detector. It is difficult because lots of my materials are aromatic that will be great on UV. I may see if I can squeeze 2 detectors out of the budget a UV and a RI.

Combination of UV (for aromatics) and ELSD along with mixed-mode will serve you:
