tightly sealed vials for hexane?

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

Hi everyone,

I have one question to you. I am working with hexane as a reagent but the vials I have do not seem tight enough so that hexane evaporates in a few hours. Do you guys know any vials which tightly seal hexane? so I can store the samples in the freezer?

Thanks,

Arum
Hi Arum

What vials are you using ?

I use various vials with teflon-faced silicone seals and solid caps - they are all hexane-tight. Caps with holes will allow diffusion through the septum.

Hi Peter,

What I am using currently is (CrossLab cap, screw, 9 mm, blue, PTFE lined) which does not sealed hexane. Hexane evaporates in a few hours at room temperature and I cannot even store my samples in freezer.

Could you tell me more about teflon-faced silicone seals and solid cap, which are all hexane-tight? Where did you order from? possibly Agilent? Is it possible to tell me specific one you use for hexane sealed since I found a few in Agilent website?

Thanks!

Arum
Hi Arun

This is the kind: http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/pro ... &region=BW which comes in different sizes. I also use similar ones from Restek and smaller ones from Agilent without problems.

Vials should certainly not leak hexane vapour at room temperature, maybe you got a bad batch. Complain to the supplier.

Thanks Peter!

I will look into it and If I have more questions I will ask you :)

Thanks for the help!

Arum
Those green cap vials from Sigma-Aldrich are the best I have used - I try to keep a box or so around for critical stuff.
