Column Unions

Hello,

I have 2 GC/MS methods that I need to run. The first is a full scan over 50-350 amu. The second is a SIM (161, 177, 198 amu). Both methods use a 1 m x 0.53 mm ID guard column connected to a 30 m x 0.25 mm ID x 0.25 um column. My question is what is the best way to connect the columns? I have the press fit type connectors or should I use something like the Agilent Ultimate union that uses the flexible metal ferrules and the deactivated union?

Thank you for your help.

Dave

I get good results with press tight connectors, but I know that some people have problems with them. Your mileage may vary.

I'm also using a press-tight connector to fit the particle trap to a PLOT column for MS. I had to replace it once, but soaking the column ends in methanol via a piece of Special High Purity Laboratory Tissue Paper (TM) softens the polyimide and helps make a good seal. The air figures seen in the MS are just about good enough.
