ran the GC FID after former operator left. Maintenance log not found.

GC FID, SSL inlet

Hexane blank - made sure all blanks and washes were fresh, along with fresh vials.

What are the first steps I need to take? Maintenance or software troubleshooting?

4 blanks run, when blanks are overlayed, matching peaks/consistent.

Thanks, in advance.

Check to make sure that the data being recorded in the method is FID on the proper channel and not the test signal. I believe in some of the software you could set the active data channel to a test signal for diagnostic purposes and it could be that since the pattern is so perfect.

Then why you post in GCMS subforum ?

Make so called blank run ie. run without injection. Check if peaks present. If no than check your hexane.

That is a software-generated test chromatogram. You are on the wrong channel.

Definitely. This is a test plot generated by GC. The area of 2nd peak is 10 times lower than 1st peak and the area of the 3rd peak is 100 times lower than 1st peak.
No contamination can make such regular pattern. Unfortunatelly I replied from my office where all picture sharing servers are blocked.
