Foreline pump not starting

Hello,

First post on these boards, and fairly new to hardware maintenance on a GCMS.

Our Foreline pump (Edwards) won't turn on upon starting the MS. I've checked the pump starts up when connected directly to the mains, and also checked the cable which connects MS to pump.

Is it simply the case of a blown fuse within the MS? And am I able to run the pump from the mains as opposed to off the MS?

Thanks for your help

...Our Turbomolecular pump (Edwards) won't turn on upon starting the MS...
Doesn't matter whether it is Edwards, Pfeifer or Varian.
More relevant information is MS type and manufacturer.

The turbomolecular pump will only be actiaved once a suitable rough vacuum has been obtained - does your system have a vacuum readback? Attempting to run it without an initial vacuum is not a good idea!

Thank you for your responses. The pump is now powering up OK after reseating the fuses.

Just curious. Have you really asked about turbo pump not foreline pump ?

I was wondering that too. Foreline pump is the large one on the floor(or bench) while the turbo molecular is the small one attached to the analyzer which you usually can't power through the mains.

Yes I got my pumps mixed up; it was indeed the foreline pump that had an issue powering up. I reseated the fuses in the MS and it seems to run fine now. I have a PerkinElmer Clarus SQ model MS.

OK. As we suspected it was a foreline pump which may be connected directly to mains. But better if it gets power from MSD module as intended by manufacturer.
On the other side turbo pump needs a controller.
