We are looking into getting an HPLC for our lab and I'd like some input on what would be a good option for our lab, and also if we should avoid any specific models.

We will be using the hplc to look at terpene content of cannabis, and also to analyse hops. We are a small start up lab with a limited budget and will be looking for a used instrument. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
First off all I would recommend to look up all the relevant applications. There you will get the information if a gradient system is used or a isocratic system, if a column oven is needed or not. And what kind of detector is used. With that information you can go and look for a used instrument.
Good luck.

You should also consider what data system you will be using - there are almost always at least some minor advantages to getting your CDS and system from the same vendor.

You can get a refurbished, warranted Agilent 1100 (the chevy, if you wil) with all the bells for <$10,000.

I agree with the poster above- Whatever type of analysis you seek to do, chances are someone has done it, or done something very similar. Browse the literature and get a feel for the various reported methods.

For your application, I think most pertinent will be sample prep. This is because you're looking to analyze a lipid, and I wonder if it will be difficult to selectively enrich terpenes.
