Anyone know of any available resources or people in Wa that would be able to do some hands on 1 on 1 training? I have 2 5890's and id really like to learn more about them and get some advice on maintenance and troubleshooting. I work in a small start up lab and inherited these machines and have been reading everything I can find, but still think the best way to really learn is to go through the procedures with someone that is already expert on them. If anyone has any suggestions or is in the greater seattle area and would be available for a day or two of training Id love to hear from you. In the past i've primarily worked with hplc's but have had some previous gc experience. However now 90% of the analysis im currently doing is dependent on the two 5890's in the lab.

I pretty much learned by reading the manual and reading and asking questions on this forum. It is basically a 6890 that has more manual and fewer electronically controlled pneumatics. Such as the total inlet flow is controlled by a black knob and a flow meter to get the values, hopefully yours at least have an EPC for constant flow. Also the FID is read by sticking a flow meter adapter into the chimney and reading the gas flow and then adjusting it using the regulators.

We have one 5890 still in operation, very reliable. I replaced an inlet temperature sender/heater last year, the first repair on it in quite a few years.
Anyway, there were service manuals available then, like 05890-90320 and for the autosampler 07673-60985. There was a training course for HP5890 Troubleshooting and Maintenance in 1994 H2603A which had a manual H2603-90000. There is a 6890 model Maintenance CD that is similar in many ways (G1530-90641, G1530-90640, or G1530 80160).
Many repair items are very similar to the 6890 with only minor differences, so don't rule out 6890 information as worthless. Many 6890 units also used the same 7673 autosamplers too, same unit.
We have at least 3 electronic copies of stuff for 5890 and 7673, so post your E-mail adress (like abc - at - xyz dot com) here, and I'll see what I can do. I can't sell the hardcopies as long as we still have an operating 5890 here.

Restek has an enitre catelog devoted to the 5890. I run all sorts of dirty and high temp analyses on mine. Scoville heat units, piperine, sugars, allyl isothiocyanate. I am looking into getting a high temp column to extend it to trisaccharides.

I think you can learn a lot of things on this forum as well as it is not clear that what exactly you want to learn. the troubleshooting is one part which can be learn by facing the problem and ractification of that problem by any authorized service engineer. if you can do work on the engineer to understand what he is doing and keeping continuous communication to learn why this may happen I think you may learn lot of things.
I have 6820,6890N,7890A and 7890B, Varion450 GC's and in most of the GC we learned by facing the problem. not by taking the training as many problems even engineer came to know when they try to resolve another problems.

KM-USA My email is dlntx9 at gmail dotcom any materials you could email would be greatly appreciated.
I agree that the best way to learn is to troubleshoot and utilize the forums and references, but thought if someone was in the area and had ample experience it could be useful to work with them for a day or two just to see what I could pick up from them. Essentially this is the first GC that I have worked extensively with and just want to learn as much as I can about it since it seems like I will be doing the majority of my analysis on it. Still learning all the quirks of chemstation as well.....

sorry about that. Extra "t" was a typo. Thanks again for the files.
