I am new to chromatography. What is Override Solvent delay? How is that going to affect MSD filament life?

Here's when we over-ride the solvent delay:

1. When we inject gas samples (because there are fewer molecules injected), such as warming a consumer product in a septum vial, then using a gas syringe to inject headspace, to get identification of what organic solvent might be present.

2. When we rinse a syringe with a liquid sample, then expel, then inject, to get identification of what organic solvent might be present.

After identification, we use traditional techniques to quantitate the solvent.

Solvent delay is built into your method to allow the large solvent peak to pass through the detector with the filament turned off so that it doesn't damage the filament.

The override button is used mostly if trouble shooting the instrument and you want the filament turned on earlier than normal, say you installed a new column or changed flow rate or oven program and you have lost your first analyte because it now comes off before the filament turns on. You override the delay to see when the analyte comes off the column, then you edit your method to change the solvent delay to a shorter time.

Otherwise just let it go until it disappears on its own.
