We are trying to run Ibuprofen on a Saturn 2000 GC/MS. After derivatization with a Diazomethane driavative, we are getting just fragments of both the Ibuprofen and the Diazomethane. We believe our problem lies with the diazomethane, however, we are not sure. Has anyone ran this type of analysis and have any suggestions.

Quite a while ago we did lots of diazomethylations of fatty acids, it worked very well. I am convinced that Ibuprofen should work also. Two things to watch come to mind if you are preparing etheral solutions of diazomethane (one of your statements seem to indicate you are using a derivative of diazomthane??): The etheral solution should be at least slightly yellow (due to the diazo...), and there should be some MeOH or maybe even water present. You may want to look at
J Chromatogr B, 679, 208 (1996) and references therin, +
Aldrichimica Acta, 31, #1, 2 (1998).
