I'm planning to use Waters Spherisorb 5.0um SAX 10mm x 250mm semi-prep column, but can't find suitable guard column. Can anyone suggest which guard column should I use for given column, or should I use guard column at all? Thank you, Andrew

A guard column is always recommended. Unfortunately for that semi preparative Spherisorb column a guard with the right dimension is not available.
If you have a used, "old" prep column packed with the same material you can use the packing material. Otherwise I would minimum install an inline filter to protect the semi prep column.
The use of a guard column with a smaller ID is possible but will give you higher back pressure. The use of a larger particle size material in the guard is not a problem at all.
Good luck.

You can obtain a semi-prep guard column and inserts from Upchurch or one of its distributors. Part numbers C-1000.
