Hi all, new to the board so forgive me any ignorances please!

I have this newer printer and a new citrix server based Empower (we used to have hard drive based Empower with a hardwire connect to an older style printer).

Im having some issues printing with Empower 2 where all the lettering in anything I print is squished together. I have tried to mess with some of the print options, but mostly it deals with font type and color, not so much spacing.

Anyone else have this issue and how was it resolved?

I might add that the printer in question is a newer color HP (I can retrieve info), while the older printers were simple black and white off brands that had no spacing issues when printing.

Did you try printing from preview or from browse project?
Does the problem occurs in both ways?
(They are handled different internally)

I print from preview only. I have not tried from browse project. Is that the option you use to utilize empower integration? If so, I used to do it that way but we now have to manually integrate everything.

Let me know if that answers your question.

I'm not sure if this answers my question.

Do you use Empower with the pro interface or quick start?
Pro interface is giving you a screen with 6 fields: quickset, browse project, Config, ....
Quickstart is on screen from where you run samples, proces, ...

When you are in the pro interface (this is the only one we use, so I can only speak for that), and go to browse project, you can go to the tab results.
If you want to print, you can select your results and then click on the print button, choose your report and print.
Or you can click on preview (3th button from the left if I'm correctly), select your report, take a look at it before printing, and then click print.

This has nothing to do with which type of integration you use.

But the difference is that they use different accounts to print from.
Did you try to update your printer drivers, and then afterwards the acquire printers in the Windows > Start > Empower (or Waters) > Acquire Printers > Get ?

Ah, sorry... We use Pro Interface and I use browse project folder for all my functions (printing, setting up runs, integration).

I do just as you describe to print, however, my previews and my prints on the new printer come out with all the letters practically printed on top of one another so you cant read it. I have tried to edit the printouts from the preview by right clicking and picking print options, but there are no options for letter spacing that I can find.

The printer drivers are brand new since the printer is new, but I will try a re-install/re-map.

I should say that this evidence (the fact the preview prints out exactly as seen) led me to believe it was the computer-to-network connection that was the issue and not the printer since the printer is only printing what the computer tells it to, however, if I print to another set of the older printers on the network (black and white), the problem dissapears.

Perhaps there is a way to fix the report method that I am missing? Or maybe when we went to the network there is some sort of network to computer issue that I am missing?

Maybe I should ask a computer board instead of a chrom board, but I was hoping someone else had this issue.

I have contacted our Waters/Empower rep though, and Im hoping some sort of solution will occur at some point.

Thanks, sorry for any confusion.

This is an interesting problem!

Have you tried a fat client? This is a simple way you determine whether this is an Empower problem or a Citrix/network problem.

[a fat client is a traditional client installed on the local machine. The client is connected to the database via the network without using citrix publishing. It is always a very good idea to have at least one fat client for testing and troubleshooting.]

However, this does appear to be the printer driver, possibly combined with a network problem. Setting up printing does cause some problems in a citrix environment, but they can usually be overcome.

Most important... have you installed the printer driver on the server? This should be done as the printing is spooled on the server.

Here are a couple of Citrix support docs that nicely explain how to verify if your driver is installed using the Citrix management console, settings to use (such as printer autocreation) and some trouble shooting tips:

Troubleshooting Citrix ICA Printer Autocreation - http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX681954

Troubleshooting and Explaining the Citrix Universal Print Driver -

Update with how you get along with this, it would be interesting to find what solves this.

Cheers,
Ben

My guess is that your Citrix admin. needs to update the printer driver on the citrix server.
Thanks,

Okay, so...

We've narrowed down the issue to our network laptop computers. Anyone with a tower computer can print fine. And I can sign onto any tower computer and print fine from it.

We reinstalled all drivers (server drivers too) and remapped all the printers, but from the laptop computer, the empower software is doing something funky and squishing letters up.

I have contacted our computer admin, and he tried all he could and suggested I talk to someone who is a server empower software expert... so I will hopefully get some sort of information out of them at some point.

Since this issue is only something with empower printouts and only from certain types of computers, it has to be some sort of hardware interaction or the software we use to off-site access the network from the laptops.

Right now, I'm regulated to signing onto a non-person account tower computer to do all my printing, which isnt fun.

But at least there arent many people in the department with laptops yet.

Thanks for the help so far... if anyone has anything more please let me know.

Hi Luv4_Pharmacology ,
  • did you check the TTF "true type fonts" one both systems? Are all fonts installed.
  • did you check the drivers (not Citrix) on the windows machines? I did have printimg issues, because the software on the laptop was the "Standard" windows driver, on the client was the driver from the printer supplier...
Best regards
