Hello,

I work at a small university and we have an old HP-5890 GC connected to an HP 3396 Series II integrator.
The instrument has not been used in at least 2 year and we would like to bring it back into regular operation.
Unfortunately, there is no one left in the department that has experience using this piece of equipment.
Assuming the instrument functions, is there a way to connect it to a PC instead of the integrator? Does anyone have experience doing something like this?
Your computer would need a GPIB interface card like 82355 (for old Pentium 1 computers), 82341, or 82350. And your 5890 would need to have a GPIB interface card. And you'd need GPIB cable to connect those, plus software and software license.
It depends. Is is a 5890 or 5890 series II and what type of communications card it has. If it is a series II with the dual RS232 GPIB you can get unichrom or openlab and hook it to a PC.
poly_chem198,

If you have GPIB, you can use unichrom, you can use Clarity, you can use an old copy of Chemstation if you can get your hands on a license.

If no HPIB, you can collect analog out and use Clarity with an A/D, PeakSimple the same way, or just use a 0-1V data acquisition software. The danger in the last one is the need to do peak integration.

Considering you are using an integrator, I will bet you don't have the HPIB in the back. If you need pin outs for the 0-1V on the 5890 I have those. The only down side to 0-1V is the limited linear range you have to work with (can't do trace peaks and large peaks on the same acquisition.)

Best regards,

AICMM

You can use chemstation software!
Importance is your system must have gpib connection gate. If yes, you can used gpib cable or usb-gpib.
Win Xp, A.10.xx will work fine
Any question please via engineer201208@gmail.com
Agilent CE
I can supply you with all of the required HPIB communication cards for your PC and for the GC. Please send me an email and I can get you some price quotes.
