MS filaments burning out, do we need a power conditioner?

Discussions about GC-MS, LC-MS, LC-FTIR, and other "coupled" analytical techniques.

We have two pfeiffer vacuum MS units, one is their most current model (only 6 months old) the other a few years old, and we go through filaments every couple months. We are hoping an electrical power conditioner would help, what do you think? Thanks for the wisdom

I don't think so. I'd rather analyse the method for solvent deley time.
Or look to see if you have air leaking into the system. Under good vacuum the filament is like a light bulb - and can last nearly forever. But it is the mass of ionizable gas hitting the filament that erodes it.

This I would definitely check. If an air leak is that bad it should have trouble tuning, but it is also a possibility. Make sure you are not having the filaments on when your solvent peak elutes or you will kill your filaments pretty quickly.
The past is there to guide us into the future, not to dwell in.
