Bismuth 3+ by HPLC

Howdy,

Does anyone know if Bismuth 3+ has a chromophore? I read that it might make a colored complex with EDTA (or possibly another complexing molecule). I am going to develop a method for Bismuth tribromophenate (if the project isn't cancelled; which almost always happens when I'm excited to work on something). I would like to quantify both bismuth and tribromophenate in the same method.

If Bismuth tribromophenate dissociates, you will be able to use UV detection for the tribromophenate only, I suspect. That's where the double bonds and hence the chromophore are. There are wet chem tests available to do the Bi, or I guess you could try complexing it with something else that has a chromophore as long as you can either wash the unreacted agent away (SPE?) or it has a different retention time from the Bi associated version.
